Brendon Todd captures first PGA TOUR victory in four years

Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods secure second victories and Rory McIlroy collects fourth victory of calendar year

Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii – A victory on the PGA TOUR is the only way to qualify for the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions. Brendon Todd became the latest player to qualify for the champions-only event. Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods picked up their second victories of the calendar year, while Rory McIlroy captured his fourth win of 2019. The winners-only event returns to The Plantation Course at Kapalua on Maui from January 1-5, 2020.

Bermuda Championship

Brendon Todd collected his second career PGA TOUR victory, and first since the 2014 AT&T Byron Nelson, at the inaugural Bermuda Championship when he closed with a 9-under 62 to finish 24-under 260 and defeat Harry Higgs by four strokes. The 34-year-old, who began the day two back from Higgs, opened the final round with a par before notching seven consecutive birdies. With no full status in the last three seasons, Todd regained his TOUR card after finishing No. 8 on the Korn Ferry Tour Finals points list and 15th in the final priority ranking. The victory qualified Todd for a return trip to The Plantation Course at Kapalua, where he finished T8 in 2015.

World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions

Rory McIlroy defeated Xander Schauffele with a birdie on the first playoff hole for his 18th career PGA TOUR victory at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China. The win marks McIlroy’s fourth win in his last 15 starts on the PGA TOUR. The Northern Ireland native has posted a win in nine of his last 11 seasons on TOUR. McIlroy qualified for his second appearance at the Sentry Tournament of Champions by virtue of his THE PLAYERS Championship victory in March.

ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP

Tiger Woods tied Sam Snead’s PGA TOUR record of 82 career victories with his three-shot win over Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Japan. The two-time Sentry Tournament of Champions winner has now converted 25 of 25 leads of three shots or more after 54 holes and 44 of 46 solo 54-hole leads. The win marks Woods’ 14th career victory after leading or co-leading after each round, which is the most of any player since 1983. Woods qualified for his ninth appearance at the Sentry Tournament of Champions by virtue of his Masters Tournament victory in April.

THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES

Justin Thomas picked up his 11th PGA TOUR title and second win at the CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES when he closed with a 5-under 67 to defeat Danny Lee by two strokes at the Club at Nine Bridges in Jeju, South Korea. The 2017 Sentry Tournament of Champions winner is now ranked tied for third in TOUR history for most wins before the age of 27 (Tiger Woods, 34; Jack Nicklaus, 20; Rory McIlroy, 11; Jordan Spieth, 11). With the victory, the Kentucky native owns four wins in Asia (2015 CIMB Classic, 2016 CIMB Classic, 2017 THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES, 2019 THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES) in only nine starts. Thomas previously qualified for the Sentry Tournament of Champions with his win at the BMW Championship earlier this year.

The two remaining opportunities on the PGA TOUR schedule for players to earn a spot in the field at the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions include the Mayakoba Golf Classic and The RSM Classic. Currently 41 players have qualified for the champions-only event courtesy of their PGA TOUR victories this calendar year, including 15 first-timers.
