Charl Schwartzel

First Appearance Qualifying win: Valspar Championship

Primarily known in the States for his historic four-birdie finish at Augusta National to win the 2011 Masters, Charl Schwartzel notched his second PGA TOUR victory in 2016 at the Valspar Championship, where the South African fired a 4-under 67 in tough conditions to catch 54-hole leader Bill Haas and win in a playoff. Schwartzel finished one of his best seasons on the PGA TOUR with five top 10s and a career-best 25th in the final FedExCup standings.

Schwartzel will make his first trip to Kapalua after conquering Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course, where a flurry of four birdies on the back nine sent him into a playoff with Haas, whom he bested on the first hole of sudden death with a par to capture the title.

“I knew it was going to be difficult,” Schwartzel said of the Sunday conditions. “Most of the day trying to aim for the middle of the greens and trying to keep bogies off the card because it was really -- when you did hit a good shot, just take it. I didn't think I was going to make that many birdies but the game caught light on the back-9.”
